Why Is Everybody Talking About Semaglutide (and what’s in it for you)?

Seems like everybody is excited about semaglutide – you hear about it everywhere from the Today show, to TikTok, to the New York Times.  That’s because clinical trials of the weight loss drug in 2021 produced jaw-dropping results, as reported by Dr. Timothy Garvey, M.D. – of the Department of Nutrition Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham, in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“This is a game-changer. We have not seen this degree of weight loss with any previous medication. More than 50 percent of trial participants are losing 15 percent of their body weight, and anywhere between a third and 40 percent of participants are losing 20 percent of their body weight. That is beginning to close the gap with bariatric surgery. I think this truly gives us a very powerful tool to treat obesity as a disease.”

Timothy Garvey, M.D.

Semaglutide is an injectable drug already approved by the FDA. Dr. Garvey says,” The benefits of Semaglutide are beyond weight loss, that high-doses of Semaglutide (2.4 mg/weekly) could prevent and treat diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and related complications, including osteoarthritis and sleep apnea. That is because patients receiving Semaglutide “Are not just losing pounds, but really improving their health, as GLP-1 medication works uniquely from the inside out to improve your metabolic health for sustainable weight loss.” This is consistent with the Obesity Treatment Guidelines published by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) for which Garvey served as lead author. These guidelines advocate for a complications-centric approach.

“Semaglutide is part of a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists, and is also known as a peptide. It increases insulin secretion, in good part why its initial foray as a drug was to treat diabetes. But, at higher doses, it acts on centers in the brain and suppresses appetite. This drug has the potential to really change the way we think about treating this disease of obesity,” according to Dr. Garvey. He further stated, “It looks like semaglutide 2.4 mg is effective and safe across a wide spectrum of patients with obesity who might be prescribed this drug, whether you are older or younger, higher BMI or lower, and regardless of race/ethnicity.”

Patients have typically seen, when used as recommended, that Semaglutide can result in sustained reduction in body weight, improved regulations of blood sugar levels, and reduced hunger and cravings. The medication is best used, and will yield the most favorable results, when combined with a smart, reduced-calorie nutrition plan. The protocol typically includes a 90-day supply, as takes time to ramp up in your body, and the dosage increases during that period of time.
